Italy's Prison Reform Faces Backlash

Published: 2024-08-07

The Italian Chamber of Deputies has officially approved the prison reform decree with 153 votes in favor, 89 against, and one abstention.

This decree, which has faced criticism for failing to prevent suicides in prisons—64 reported since its introduction—has sparked a heated debate among lawmakers.

Justice Minister Carlo Nordio emphasized the need for urgent measures to address overcrowding in prisons, while opposition leader Elly Schlein condemned the government's punitive approach, arguing it exacerbates social issues rather than solving them.

The opposition has called for an urgent briefing from the government, highlighting concerns over the lack of representation during the vote.

Meanwhile, a proposal to expand early release for inmates has been sent back to committee, drawing further criticism from its proponents.
