Italy's Healthcare Funding Sparks Debate

Published: 2024-10-18

Italy's government has announced a significant increase in healthcare funding, allocating 6.4 billion euros for 2025-2026. Despite this, the healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP remains one of the lowest in Europe, projected at 6.05% for 2025 and 2026. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni defends the budget, highlighting the increase in absolute terms, while opposition leaders argue that the spending cuts relative to GDP will impact services.

The funds are intended to hire 6,000 medical staff, but critics say this falls short of the 30,000 needed.

The debate continues as the government faces pressure to reform and improve efficiency in the healthcare system.
