Italy has seen a significant decrease in migrant arrivals in 2024, with a 62% drop compared to the previous year.
This decline is attributed to increased efforts in controlling migration routes, particularly from Bangladesh through Egypt to Italy.
The Italian Ministry of the Interior reports that 35,725 migrants have arrived so far this year, compared to 94,009 in the same period in 2023. The most common nationalities among these migrants are Bangladeshi, Syrian, and Tunisian.
Meanwhile, Spain and Greece have experienced a surge in migrant arrivals, with increases of 153% and 57% respectively.
The Italian government has also intensified its crackdown on human traffickers, arresting 118 individuals, including 40 smugglers, marking a 10% increase in arrests from the previous year.
Humanitarian efforts continue, with the Louise Michel vessel, supported by artist Banksy, rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean and docking in Pozzallo.
