Italy Faces Severe Drought Crisis

Published: 2024-07-25

Italy is facing a severe drought, particularly in the southern regions, with Sicily being hit the hardest.

Recent reports indicate that in just three weeks, the remaining water reserves will be allocated solely for domestic use, leaving agriculture without any resources.

The situation is dire, with Puglia, Abruzzo, and Sicily experiencing critical shortages.

In Sicily, six out of 29 water basins are completely dry, and the region is expected to incur damages of approximately 2.7 billion euros in the agricultural sector alone.

Experts warn that the crisis is unprecedented, with some areas reporting a 60% annual deficit in water supply.

As the drought continues, the focus shifts to underground water sources as a potential solution for the future.
