The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) has raised concerns about racial profiling by Italian police forces.
According to a recent report, there are frequent police stops based on ethnic origin, particularly affecting the Romani community and people of African descent.
The report highlights a lack of awareness among authorities regarding the extent of this issue, as well as insufficient data collection on police activities.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has defended the police, stating they work diligently to ensure public safety without discrimination.
The ECRI also notes a troubling rise in xenophobic public discourse and divisive political rhetoric in Italy.
