Italy Doubles Flat Tax for Wealthy Expats

Published: 2024-08-07

The Italian government has approved a significant increase in the flat tax for wealthy foreigners relocating to Italy, raising it from €100,000 to €200,000 annually.

This measure, part of the Omnibus decree, aims to attract high-net-worth individuals to the country, a strategy initiated in 2016. The flat tax allows these individuals to pay a fixed amount on foreign income, with an option for family members to join under a separate tax of €25,000. While this initiative has drawn hundreds of wealthy residents, it has also faced criticism for favoring the rich at the expense of broader tax equity.

Additionally, the decree includes financial support for families displaced by the collapse of the Vele di Scampia, offering up to €1,100 per month.

The government hopes these measures will stimulate investment and economic growth in Italy.
