The Italian government is revisiting the idea of a one-time levy on windfall profits, targeting banks, insurance companies, and energy firms.
This proposal comes as the government seeks additional funds for its economic plans.
Unlike the previous attempt in 2023, which faced significant opposition and was eventually softened, the current approach aims for a collaborative "solidarity contribution".
This would involve a 1-2% levy on profits from the past 24 months.
The proposal has gained some support from political parties, including Forza Italia, which previously opposed such measures.
The government emphasizes that this is not a tax but a cooperative effort to support the Italian economy.
