Italy Approves Judicial Career Reform

Published: 2025-01-16

Italy's Chamber of Deputies has approved a constitutional reform to separate the careers of judges and prosecutors, a move hailed as historic by supporters.

The reform, which passed with 174 votes in favor, aims to create two separate judicial councils and establish a disciplinary high court.

Critics, however, argue that the government’s refusal to accept amendments undermines democratic debate.

Opposition parties remain divided, with some supporting the reform in principle but opposing specific provisions, such as the random selection of council members.

The reform now heads to the Senate for further approval, with a referendum likely if a two-thirds majority is not reached.

Justice Minister Carlo Nordio defended the reform, dismissing claims that it weakens judicial independence.
