Luigi Giacomo Passeri, a 31-year-old Italian from Pescara, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Egypt for drug trafficking.
Arrested in August last year, Passeri was found with marijuana and accused of being part of an international drug network.
His family claims he is innocent and has been subjected to inhumane conditions, including torture and overcrowding in prison.
They are appealing to the Italian government for intervention, fearing he may face a fate similar to other high-profile cases in Egypt.
The Italian Embassy is involved, but diplomatic efforts face significant challenges due to Egypt's strict drug laws.
Passeri's lawyer plans to appeal the sentence, hoping for a transfer to Italy or a reduced sentence.
