Italian Air Travel Disrupted by Strikes

Published: 2024-09-06

Travelers in Italy faced significant disruptions on Saturday, September 7, due to a series of strikes affecting air travel.

The strikes, lasting four hours from 1 PM to 5 PM, were organized by various unions representing employees of Wizz Air Malta and Ita Airways.

Workers, including pilots and flight attendants, protested against demanding work schedules and unilateral changes to pay regulations by Wizz Air, seeking a collective contract and adherence to Italian health and safety laws.

Similarly, Ita Airways employees, backed by Fit-Cisl and Ugl-Ta unions, protested following the European approval of Lufthansa's acquisition of a 41% stake in the company, fearing negative impacts on their working conditions.

Despite the disruptions, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (Enac) ensured that certain flights, including those for emergencies and state purposes, would operate as scheduled.
