EU Proposes Tougher Migrant Return Rules

Published: 2025-03-12

The European Commission has unveiled a new regulation to streamline the return of irregular migrants across the EU.

The proposal, presented by President Ursula von der Leyen, aims to replace the outdated 2008 directive.

Key measures include accelerated deportations, voluntary return incentives, and the establishment of return centers in third countries under strict human rights conditions.

The regulation also introduces a unified system for all 27 member states to ensure consistency and efficiency.

Migrants who fail to comply with return orders may face entry bans of up to 10 years.

If approved, the rules will be binding across the EU, marking a significant shift in migration policy.
