European leaders are debating the "ReArm Europe" plan proposed by Ursula von der Leyen, which aims to boost defense spending across the EU.
While the initiative has received general support, disagreements persist over its implementation, timing, and even its name.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed reservations, emphasizing that Italy will not increase its deficit to fund military spending, despite the plan's flexibility.
This stance aligns with domestic concerns, as many Italians face delays in pension payments, making defense spending a contentious issue.
Meanwhile, Meloni has also advocated for extending NATO's Article 5 principles to Ukraine as a long-term security measure, highlighting divisions within the EU on defense priorities.
