Cutro Tragedy: Investigators Conclude Case

Published: 2024-07-23

Seventeen months after the tragic shipwreck off the coast of Cutro, where at least 98 migrants, including 35 children, lost their lives, the Crotone prosecutor's office has concluded its investigation.

Authorities believe the disaster could have been prevented.

Six individuals, including four from the Guardia di Finanza and two from the Coast Guard, are facing charges of false reporting, omission of duty, and manslaughter.

The investigation revealed that the Guardia di Finanza failed to properly respond to distress signals and miscommunicated their actions, leading to a lack of timely rescue efforts.

Despite knowing the severe weather conditions, the Coast Guard did not initiate a search and rescue operation, which could have saved lives.

The case highlights significant failures in communication and responsibility among the agencies involved.
