Controversial School Voucher Sparks Debate

Published: 2024-11-14

In Italy, a new proposal by Fratelli d’Italia has ignited a heated debate over education funding.

Starting in 2025, families with an ISEE income of up to 40,000 euros could receive a voucher worth up to 1,500 euros annually, exclusively for private schools.

This initiative, backed by a maximum annual budget of 65 million euros, aims to support educational choice.

However, it has faced strong opposition, particularly from the M5S party, which argues that it undermines public education by favoring private institutions.

Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara defends the proposal, emphasizing the importance of educational access regardless of income.

Critics, however, claim it exacerbates inequality by disadvantaging families who prefer public schools.
