A brutal attack on journalist Andrea Joly of La Stampa by alleged members of the neofascist group CasaPound has sparked widespread condemnation across the political spectrum in Italy.
The incident occurred late Saturday night when Joly was confronted and assaulted by a group of six individuals.
Senate President Ignazio La Russa expressed his total condemnation of the violence, emphasizing the need for journalists to be more transparent about their roles.
However, his comments about Joly not declaring himself as a journalist drew criticism from opposition leaders, who found his remarks unacceptable.
La Russa also addressed issues of antisemitism, pledging his support for senator Liliana Segre, and reassured that Italy would respond firmly against any antisemitic actions.
The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of journalists in Italy, highlighting the ongoing tensions within the political landscape.
