Alpine Peaks Face Unprecedented Warmth

Published: 2024-08-12

In a striking indication of climate change, temperatures at high altitudes in the Alps have reached unprecedented levels.

The Colle Major weather station on Mont Blanc, Europe's highest peak, recorded temperatures above freezing for 33 consecutive hours, a phenomenon not seen since the station's installation nine years ago.

This unusual warmth, which peaked at over 4 degrees Celsius, has led to significant snow and ice melt, raising concerns about the health of glaciers.

Similarly, the Capanna Margherita on Monte Rosa reported a near-record high of 9 degrees Celsius.

These alarming temperature spikes highlight the ongoing impact of climate change on Europe's mountainous regions, where the melting of snow and ice is accelerating.

Experts from Arpa Valle d'Aosta are conducting further analysis to understand the long-term implications of these findings.
