Almodóvar's English Debut Wins Venice's Top Honor

Published: 2024-09-07

Pedro Almodóvar's first English-language film, "The Room Next Door," has won the prestigious Golden Lion at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.

The film, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, explores themes of friendship and the right to die with dignity, focusing on a terminally ill character's decision to pursue euthanasia.

Almodóvar's win highlights the ongoing dialogue about end-of-life rights, a topic he passionately advocates for as a fundamental human right.

The festival also saw Maura Delpero's "Vermiglio" win the Silver Lion, while Vincent Lindon and Francesco Gheghi received acting honors.

The event was marked by Nicole Kidman's absence due to a family tragedy, adding an emotional note to the closing ceremony.
